A simple redaction checklist for consumers preparing breach or settlement notice text.
Remove before sharing
- Social Security numbers, tax IDs, full birth dates, full account numbers, card numbers, and bank routing details.
- Passwords, secret keys, login codes, claim codes, barcodes, QR codes, activation codes, and one-time links.
- Full driver's license, passport, health insurance, medical record, or government benefit numbers.
- Children's information, unrelated household member information, and any document page not needed to understand the notice.
Usually safe to leave
- Company or settlement name.
- Notice deadline, response deadline, and general category of information affected.
- Public website address and public phone number from the notice.
- Your state, if relevant, without full street address.
